ICYMI: Last Sunday John Oliver announced that he would be selling Yankees Legends Suite tickets for a quarter on his show, Last Week Tonight. The catch? Viewers are required to tweet at him with the hashtag #IHaveNeverSatInAPremiumLocation along with a photo of what they’d wear to the game.
This presidential troll job was in response to the Yankees front office decision to do away with PDF/print at home tickets, a staple of the blue collar fan ticket service market. When Yankees management was faced with heated criticism for that decision, they decided to throw Lonn Trost, the COO and General Counsel for the organization to the lions. Earlier this year he went on to defend the decision on the Boomer & Carton Show by explaining that premium-ticket holders despise those that sit in their section for less than face-value, and stated “And quite frankly, the fan may be someone who has never sat in a premium location.”
Well, John Oliver used his terminal case of stick-it-to-the-man-neosis for the greater good. Needless to say, the most outrageous wardrobe selections would be picked to sit in probably the most premium seats in Major League Baseball, fueling the Yankees management hate fire.
Here were the winners for the first two games of the season:
What better to stick it to the man than to send riff-raff dressed as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Unicorns and “Left Sharks” to sit directly behind home plate? The fact that these tickets are located directly behind home plate and the Yanks can do nothing to stop the telecast from catching these hooligans must be making their blood boil.
And I for one, am fucking ecstatic. Although doing away with print-at-home tickets is most likely the way of the future for the MLB, the complete ignorance on the part of management is still disheartening. Sadly, the average Yankee fan, or the family interested in seeing a game at an affordable price will suffer. But the organization knows that the demand for tickets will always be there, and they will continue to line their pockets through the Yankees Ticket Exchange, a MLB elitist paradise where price floors are utilized.
Although the Yanks will never turn back on their policy, it is still nice to watch someone troll the organization so freely… Even if the elite sitting in the Legends Suite area can retreat behind their Trump-esque wall at a moments notice.
